The Mirador del Río, located north of Lanzarote, is one of the most emblematic and fascinating places in the Canary Islands. This observation point offers spectacular views of the Chinijo archipelago and, especially, the island of La Graciosa, creating an unforgettable visual experience for visitors.
Designed by the famous Lanzarote architect César Manrique in 1973, the viewpoint is harmoniously integrated into the natural environment, using materials and shapes that reflect Manrique’s aesthetics and philosophy. The building is camouflaged at the top of the cliffs of Famara, at a height of 475 meters above sea level, offering a 360-degree panoramic perspective.
The Mirador del Río is more than a simple observation point. Inside, visitors can find a cozy cafe with large windows that allow you to enjoy the landscape while enjoying a drink or snack. In addition, it has a souvenir shop and a small gallery that shows Manrique’s work and his contribution to the conservation and sustainable development of Lanzarote.
To get to Mirador del Río from Costa Teguise, one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, you can follow a simple and scenic route that crosses some of the most characteristic landscapes of Lanzarote.
The route begins by taking the LZ-1 highway heading north from Costa Teguise. This road passes through the picturesque town of Arrieta, where you can make a stop to enjoy its beaches and its gastronomic offer, especially fresh seafood. Continuing along the LZ-1, you reach the town of Órzola, the northernmost point of the island and known for being the port from where the ferries leave for La Graciosa.
From Órzola, take the LZ-202 road that ascends towards the Risco de Famara. This stretch of the route is particularly impressive, with views opening out to the Atlantic Ocean and sheer cliffs. As you advance, you can see lava fields and vegetation adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the island.
Finally, upon reaching the end of LZ-202, follow the signs towards Mirador del Río. The road winds to the top, where the parking lot for the viewpoint is located. The total journey from Costa Teguise to the viewpoint is approximately 40 kilometers and can take around 45 minutes by car, depending on traffic and stops made along the way.
Visiting the Mirador del Río not only provides an opportunity to enjoy impressive views, but also allows you to connect with the artistic and ecological vision of César Manrique. Its design, which blends with the landscape, invites us to reflect on the relationship between man and nature, and how architecture can be a bridge between the two.
The Mirador del Río is an essential destination in Lanzarote. Its access from Costa Teguise is easy and pleasant, offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of César Manrique’s masterpieces while marveling at one of the most impressive panoramas of the Canary archipelago.
