Places of interest: Papagayo beaches

The beaches of Papagayo, located in the extreme south of Lanzarote, are known for being a true natural paradise within the Los Ajaches Natural Park. This protected area is home to some of the most spectacular beaches on the island, characterized by its crystal-clear turquoise waters, golden sands and volcanic landscapes that contrast with the blue of the Atlantic Ocean. This corner of the island is one of the most popular destinations for both tourists and residents looking to disconnect and enjoy the tranquility offered by these beaches, away from the hustle and bustle of the most touristy areas. The beaches of Papagayo are, in reality, a set of small coves that include Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, Playa de la Cera, Caleta del Congrio and Playa de Papagayo itself, which is the most famous of all. Each of these beaches has its own charm, but they all share the same characteristics of serene and transparent waters, ideal for swimming, diving or simply relaxing in the sun. The geological formation of the area, with cliffs and ravines of volcanic origin, offers an unspoiled natural environment that has remained largely intact, in part thanks to the regulations that protect the park.

How to get to the beaches of Papagayo from Costa Teguise

From Costa Teguise you can reach the beaches of Papagayo in approximately 45 minutes by car. The route covers about 45 kilometers, and the route is simple and well signposted, although the last section may require a little more care. The most direct route begins by taking the LZ-2 highway heading south, towards the municipality of Yaiza. Upon reaching the Playa Blanca roundabout, take the exit towards the Los Ajaches Protected Area, which is where the Papagayo beaches are located. At this point, it is important to note that access to Papagayo beaches is regulated and a small entrance fee is charged, which is usually around three euros per vehicle. The money raised goes to the conservation of the natural park.

The last stretch of the road is not paved and can be somewhat bumpy for conventional vehicles, although it is perfectly passable. The dirt road leads directly to a designated parking lot, from where you can walk to the different beaches in the area. For those who prefer not to drive, it is also possible to reach Papagayo by boat from the port of Playa Blanca, a more scenic and convenient option for many visitors.

Once in Papagayo, the recommendation is to bring water, food and sun protection, since there are no shops or many tourist services in the area, thus preserving the natural character of the beaches. Some coves have a small beach bar, but the offering is limited. This allows visitors to enjoy a more authentic experience, surrounded only by the sea, the sky and the impressive volcanic landscape of Lanzarote.

The beaches of Papagayo are a natural treasure of Lanzarote, combining beauty, tranquility and a unique experience for nature lovers. The visit from Costa Teguise is simple and accessible, making it a must-see excursion for those seeking to see the best of the island.
