Places of interest: Cactus Garden

The Cactus Garden, located in the town of Guatiza, is one of the last masterpieces of the famous artist and architect César Manrique. Opened in 1990, this garden transformed an old volcanic ash quarry into a space that combines art, nature and sustainability. Manrique, a fervent advocate of the integration of nature with human intervention, designed the garden in the form of an amphitheater, using the natural topography to create an ideal microclimate for plants. The garden houses more than 4,500 cactus specimens of some 450 different species, originating from all over the world, including North and South America, Africa and the Canary Islands. These plants are organized into different sections according to their geographic origin, allowing visitors to explore the diversity and adaptations of these species. Some of the most notable species include Opuntia (prickly pear cactus), Ferocactus, Echinocactus grusonii (known as “mother-in-law’s seat”), Cereus and Aloe. One of the most striking elements of the garden is its monumental entrance, adorned with a large metal cactus designed by Manrique, a symbol of the fusion between art and nature. Inside the garden, stone paths guide visitors through the different levels, allowing panoramic views of the complex and the surrounding landscape. A restored windmill at the top of the garden acts as a reminder of the island’s agricultural heritage and offers a spectacular view of the area. The Cactus Garden is not only a place to admire the beauty of these plants, but also to learn about their ecology and conservation. Along the route, there are information panels providing details about the species and their origin, underlining the importance of preserving these plants in a world increasingly threatened by climate change and desertification. To get to the Cactus Garden from Costa Teguise, there are several options. By car, take the LZ-1 north, following the signs for Guatiza. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes and offers views of the characteristic volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. It is also possible to arrive by public transport by taking a bus from Costa Teguise to Arrecife and, from there, a second bus to Guatiza, which can take around 40 minutes in total. Visiting the Cactus Garden is an unforgettable experience that combines the contemplation of nature, art and local history in one place. This space, where Manrique’s work comes to life through native and exotic flora, is an essential destination for any visitor to Lanzarote.
